Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids are hormones produced by the adrenal glands that help the body respond to stress, inflammation and immune challenges. They are also widely used as medications to control chronic inflammatory or autoimmune conditions.

While these hormones and drugs can be life-saving, long-term or excessive use may cause side effects that accelerate aging, including bone loss, insulin resistance and suppressed immunity. Types of corticosteroids

There are two main categories of corticosteroids:

  • Controlling stress responses via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.

In medicine, corticosteroids are used to treat conditions such as:

  • Autoimmune and transplant-related issues.

They are powerful tools but require careful management.

Natural corticosteroids vs. medications

  • Watch for weight gain, high blood sugar, mood changes and immune suppression;
  • Work with a healthcare provider to adjust dosage and support balance.

Support recovery

  • Eat a nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory diet;
  • Exercise regularly to maintain bone and muscle health;
  • Manage stress with meditation, breathwork and restful sleep.

These strategies can reduce the wear and tear caused by both internal and external corticosteroids.

Corticosteroids are powerful allies in times of stress and inflammation, but over time, they can also become silent saboteurs of cellular health and repair. Whether produced naturally or taken as medication, they require careful balance.
