New study reveals the anti-aging powers of Clerodendranthus Spicatus Tea

A groundbreaking study has unveiled the antioxidant and hypolipidemic activities of Clerodendranthus Spicatus (Thunb.) water extracts, heralding a promising new avenue in anti-aging research.

Known in China as “maoxucao” or kidney tea, this perennial herb from the Lamiaceae family has long been celebrated for its diuretic, anti-stone, and kidney-protective effects. Traditionally consumed as a functional food for treating kidney inflammation, dysuria, and diabetes, its leaves are popularly brewed as a healthful tea believed to fortify the kidneys.

New study: longevity-promoting effects of Clerodendranthus Spicatus

The study aimed to further understand the longevity-promoting effects of Clerodendranthus Spicatus, which previous research has shown to include neuroprotective, anticancer, and antioxidant properties. The safety and specific health-promoting benefits of this herb as a dietary supplement, however, had remained unclear until now.

Researchers focused on the effects of Clerodendranthus Spicatus water extracts on the longevity of the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), examining its impact from physiological, biochemical, to molecular levels.

The findings are nothing short of remarkable: the water extract, rich in phenolic components such as rosmarinic acid and eugenolinic acid, as well as flavonoids like quercetin and isorhamnetin, significantly extended the lifespan of C. elegans. Moreover, the extract was found to reduce levels of lipofuscin and reactive oxygen species in the worms, indicators of aging and oxidative stress, respectively.

Further analysis revealed that the extract influences stress resistance and lipid metabolism through the modulation of key signaling pathways and gene expression, including DAF-16, HSF-1, and NHR-49, and genes such as sod-3, ctl-1, hsp-16.2, and acs-2.

The study concludes that Clerodendranthus Spicatus is not only safe for daily consumption but also offers considerable health benefits as a tea, positioning it as a viable option for those seeking natural anti-aging solutions. This discovery adds to the growing body of evidence supporting the health-promoting properties of traditional herbal medicines and opens new doors for their use in enhancing longevity and quality of life.
